The buildings surrounding Plaza Mayor have a uniform architecture, with three stories and arcades.<\/p>\n<p>In the center of Plaza Mayor stands an equestrian statue of King Philip III, made in 1616 by Giambologna and Tacca. This statue was moved and placed in the square in 1848 by decision of Isabella II.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4482\" data-end=\"4638\">Historically, Plaza Mayor served as a market, bullfighting arena, site for public executions, and even auto-da-f\u00e9. Its name, \u00ab\u00a0Sol,\u00a0\u00bb comes from the fact that the gate was oriented eastward and adorned with a solar symbol.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2463\" data-end=\"2618\">At the center of the square is Kilometer Zero, the symbolic starting point of Spain\u2019s radial roads. The cornerstone was laid in 1907, and the building was officially inaugurated in 1919.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4178\" data-end=\"4344\">Originally, it served as a postal and telegraph distribution center, combining public and utility functions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4486\" data-end=\"4636\">In 1993, Palacio de Cibeles was declared a \u201cProperty of Cultural Interest\u201d for its architectural significance. The temple was originally built around the 2nd century BC, near Aswan, in Egypt\/Nubia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5664\" data-end=\"5866\">It was gifted to Spain by the Egyptian government in 1968, as a thank-you for assistance during the Nubian temples\u2019 rescue campaign. The temple was dismantled stone by stone, transported to Spain, and reconstructed in Madrid between 1970 and 1972.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6027\" data-end=\"6172\">It is one of the few examples of ancient Egyptian architecture reconstructed outside Egypt.
