It was fully renovated and modernized in <strong data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"607\">2007<\/strong>, with a more interactive and contemporary museum design.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"83\" data-end=\"218\">The La Rochelle Natural History Museum displays nearly <strong data-start=\"242\" data-end=\"259\">10,000 objects<\/strong> across 5 levels and 32 rooms, drawn from natural history and ethnographic collections.<\/p>\n<p>Its collections cover a wide range of fields, including zoology, botany, mineralogy, paleontology, and ethnography. It also includes a <strong data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1088\">scientific library<\/strong> dedicated to natural sciences and ethnography, with thousands of works.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1764\"><strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1762\">3. Three of these vessels are <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"456\">open to visitors afloat<\/strong>, allowing visitors to board them and discover life on board.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"724\">Among its emblematic vessels is the <strong data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"654\">weather frigate France 1<\/strong>, listed as a historic monument.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"865\">The museum was founded in <strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"760\">1988<\/strong>, first as an association, before becoming a municipal museum.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"1086\">The onshore museum consists of a <strong data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"929\">flag gallery<\/strong> covered with colorful sail-shaped canvases, housing the permanent exhibition \u201cLa Rochelle, Born from the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1090\" data-end=\"1257\">The former port \u201cEncan\u201d building houses a collection of <strong data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1185\">small pleasure boats<\/strong> and temporary exhibitions. The museum is dedicated to the historical relations between France \u2014 particularly La Rochelle \u2014 and the Americas, including the Caribbean, New France, and Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"602\" data-end=\"745\">It notably addresses the theme of the <strong data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"656\">slave trade<\/strong> and slavery in the Caribbean colonies. It stretches for nearly <strong data-start=\"245\" data-end=\"253\">2 km<\/strong>, forming a beautiful green corridor through the city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"350\" data-end=\"508\">The park was laid out between May <strong data-start=\"382\" data-end=\"407\">1887 and December 1890<\/strong> on the site of the city\u2019s former fortifications. Its creation was made possible thanks to a legacy from <strong data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"595\">Mademoiselle Ad\u00e8le Charruyer<\/strong>, daughter of a La Rochelle shipowner.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"840\">Two streams, the <strong data-start=\"690\" data-end=\"701\">F\u00e9tilly<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"718\">Lafond<\/strong>, run through the park; they are remnants of the old fortification moats.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"994\">The park is designed in an <strong data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"894\">English landscape style<\/strong>, with winding paths and large century-old trees. Since <strong data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1013\">1945<\/strong>, it has housed a <strong data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1063\">4-hectare<\/strong> animal park: Parc Charles-\u00c9douard Beltr\u00e9mieux. Mail Gardens<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"107\" data-end=\"254\">The All\u00e9es du Mail form a public promenade around <strong data-start=\"167\" data-end=\"176\">600 m<\/strong> long along the seafront in La Rochelle. Originally, in the 16th century, the \u201cMail\u201d was a meadow used for festivals and popular celebrations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"585\">In the 17th century, this land was laid out for playing the <strong data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"490\">mail game<\/strong>, an ancestor of croquet, which gave the avenue its name.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"737\">The promenade consists of a <strong data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"647\">wide central lawn<\/strong> bordered by flowerbeds and surrounded by trees. On each side of the central lawn are a pedestrian path, a row of trees, and a space for vehicle traffic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"737\">At the end of the Mail stands a <strong data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1140\">war memorial<\/strong> from the First World War, inaugurated in 1922. The Mail is surrounded by <strong data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1278\">seaside villas<\/strong> and elegant residential houses hidden behind black gates.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2512\"><strong data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2510\">3. This beach has wooden decking to make access to the water easier, particularly for people with reduced mobility, with equipment such as the Tiralo and Hippocampe beach wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"638\" data-end=\"823\"><strong data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"662\">Minimes Beach<\/strong> is the largest beach in La Rochelle, with an open view of the marina and the \u201cLighthouse at the End of the World.\u201d At Minimes Beach, visitors can enjoy activities such as beach volleyball, sailing, paddleboarding, or shore fishing.
