The bridge is world-famous thanks to the children&rsquo;s song \u201cSur le pont d\u2019Avignon,\u201d which recalls the dances and celebrations once held on its arches. Construction began around <strong data-start=\"339\" data-end=\"347\">1177<\/strong> and was completed around <strong data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"378\">1185<\/strong>, originally in wood.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"593\">The rebuilt stone bridge originally featured <strong data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"509\">22 arches<\/strong> and stretched approximately <strong data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"544\">900 meters<\/strong>. It suffered repeated destruction from Rh\u00f4ne floods, and the high maintenance costs eventually led to its abandonment in the 17th century.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"1066\">Legend tells that the bridge was commissioned to a young shepherd named <strong data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"908\">B\u00e9n\u00e9zet<\/strong>, who received a divine command. He is said to have miraculously lifted a huge stone to lay the first foundation. On one of the surviving piers stands the <strong data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1141\">Saint-B\u00e9n\u00e9zet Chapel<\/strong>, with the <strong data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1192\">Saint Nicholas Chapel<\/strong> above it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1405\">One end of the bridge is marked by the <strong data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1307\">Philippe-le-Bel Tower<\/strong>, which served as the gateway to Villeneuve-l\u00e8s-Avignon.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1436\" data-end=\"1474\">3. It was restored in <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"481\">1868\u20131869<\/strong> and again after the bombings of <strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"534\">1944<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"749\">Historically, it carried other names, including \u201cSaint-Antoine Gate\u201d and later \u201cLiberty Gate\u201d during the Revolution of 1792.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"877\">The <strong data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"779\">Avignon city walls<\/strong> extend for approximately <strong data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"807\">4.3 km<\/strong>, encircling the old town. These fortifications were built during the <strong data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"931\">14th century<\/strong>, particularly under Pope Innocent VI (beginning in 1355), to protect the city from incursions by the Great Companies. Originally, the walls included <strong data-start=\"1146\" data-end=\"1162\">twelve gates<\/strong>, but this number was reduced to seven during modifications carried out between 1481 and 1487.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1496\">With advances in artillery, parts of the fortifications were reinforced during the 16th century, with additional battlements and loopholes added.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2610\" data-end=\"2659\">5. The architects responsible for its reconstruction in the 19th century were <strong data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"491\">Joseph-Auguste Joffroy<\/strong> for the structure and <strong data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"530\">L\u00e9on Feuch\u00e8re<\/strong> for the fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"733\">The modern building was completed in <strong data-start=\"624\" data-end=\"632\">1856<\/strong>, although its Jacquemart tower is much older. Rue des Teinturiers<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"197\" data-end=\"355\">The <strong data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"223\">Rue des Teinturiers<\/strong> runs through Avignon\u2019s historic center within the city walls, alongside a canal fed by the Sorgue. Its name comes from its industrial past: between the 14th and 19th centuries, numerous dyeing workshops used the canal water to wash, rinse, and dye fabrics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"785\">At its peak, up to <strong data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"619\">23 paddle wheels<\/strong> powered silk workshops and mills; today, <strong data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"700\">four wheels<\/strong> still remain as witnesses to this past.
